Our Mills

Every A.SHIMUS piece begins with a fabric chosen for its purpose. These are the Japanese mills and textile specialists behind our cloth: keepers of regional craft, and developers of what comes next.

STYLEM

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Texture built slowly on shuttle looms, by makers STYLEM helps train, with support that reaches the cotton farmers at the very start of the chain.
STYLEM works across the whole textile chain, from raw fiber and yarn to weaving, knitting and finishing. What you feel in a finished fabric is the sum of decisions made long before it reaches the cutting table. In 2025, it founded Canale Japan with Kozuka Keori to expand Bishu's shuttle-loom capacity and train the next generation of weavers.

Slow-woven texture. Canale fabrics are woven on adapted Schönherr shuttle looms by skilled craftspeople, giving cloth dimensional texture and depth.

Craft with a future. New loom capacity and apprentice training keep a rare weaving method alive.

Support at the source. ORGANIC FIELD buys cotton from farmers in India during their three-year conversion to organic, at a premium from the first year.

TAKISADA

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Wool given a second life, colored by its own fibers instead of fresh dye: refined cloth with a lighter footprint.
Founded in 1864 as a Nagoya kimono and fabric wholesaler, TAKISADA is a textile specialist connecting material development with the needs of clothing. Formerly Takisada-Nagoya, it became TAKISADA Corporation in August 2026. Its RE:NEWOOL®️initiative opens reclaimed wool garments and unused yarn back into fiber, then develops them into new wool-blend fabrics with partners across Bishu.

Color from the fiber itself. Reclaimed sweaters are hand-sorted into about 50 shades, then blended to recipe like paint on a palette, often with no re-dyeing.

Heritage at work. RE:NEWOOL®️ builds on keshichi, Bishu's recycled-wool craft in use since around 1960.

Circular polyester. With JEPLAN, TAKISADA develops blouse, jacket and trouser fabrics from BRING Material recycled polyester.

SUZUKEN KEORI

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Texture refined on the loom before production, undyed natural wool, and washi blends that keeo wool light enough to wear beyond winter.
Rooted in Bishu, Japan's historic wool district, Suzuken works by fueki ryūkō: keep the essence, welcome change. Every fabric is test-woven in its own mill before production. Wool meets silk, linen and washi paper yarn, giving a familiar fiber new expression.

The loom fits the fabric. Slow looms when hand feel and surface matter most; faster looms where they don't.

Color without dye. Natural Color Wool uses naturally colored sheep's wool, saving the water, dyes and heat of dyeing.

Beyond winter wool. Highly twisted wool warp with washi-paper weft creates a light cloth with a fresh, cool feel.

NOBEOKA, MIYAZAKI・SINCE 1924

ASAHI KASEI

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

A lining that breathes and never clings, made from a cotton byproduct in a closed-loop process.
Make a Bemberg™, the cupro lining made from cotton linter: the short fibers around a cotton seed, recovered during cottonseed-oil production and refined into regenerated cellulose fiber. Its closed-loop production recovers and reuses copper and ammonia. Wear testing with brands turns material research into real-world comfort.

Comfortable all day. Bemberg™ absorbes and releases moisture and resists static, so a lined jacket stays fresh from morning to evening.

Glides on and off. Its smooth surface slides easily over a blouse and against the skin.

A century of research. Founder Shitagau Noguchi set out to make quality clothing materials more accessible; production began in 1924.

UNI TEXTILE

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Fluid, lightweight fabrics that suit a smaller frame, made by known Japanese factories UNI invests in the quantities actually needed.
UNI Textile develops its KOMON KOUBOU fabrics through a Japanese production network centered on Hokuriku, with particular strength in light and medium-weight womenswear materials. It invests in partner factories' equipment, so the looms, machinery and people behind each fabric are there for the next collection as well as this one.

Known makers. Weaving, processing and delivery are coordinated so UNI knows where, when and by whom each fabric is made.

Japan's textile regions. Partnerships reach from Hokuriku to Kyoto Nishiwaki and Enshu.

Made to need. Right-sized lots and water-free small-order digital printing keep excess production down.

TA FRONTIER

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Pale shades that stay opaque, fabric that stays soft and dry, and polyester that gets a second life.
Formerly Tenjin Frontier, the company joined Asahi Kasei Advance in October 2026 to form TA Frontier, pairing fiber research and manufacturing with a trading company's reach. At its Matsuyama base, research and production sit side by side, so new fiber technology moves straight into making.

Less sheer in pale shades. WAVERON®️'s flattened, four-peak cross-section reduces transparency in light colors.

Soft, dry drape. Spaces between fibers draw in moisture, surface grooves spread it, and flat fibers bend for softness.

Polyester, again. ECOPET®️ recycles production waste and used polyester into new fiber.

KUWAMURA TEXTILE

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Smooth, lustrous cotton for blouses worn week after week, from a mill that finds a use for every last remnant.
Based in the Banshu weaving region, Kuwamura builds color and pattern into the yarn before weaving. In 1947 Toshiro Kuwamura restarted its jacquard factory with twelve looms after wartime disruption. Its own mill handles development, trials and production, including fine shirt and blouse cottons.

Woven-in character. Pattern and texture are built through the weave, on several loom types in-house.

Refined cotton. Supima cotton and its original Filroi extra-long-staple compact yarn give a smooth, lustrous surface.

Every piece has a use. Team Kuwamura turns discontinued fabrics and cutting remnants into bags, aprons and coasters.

MATERIALS SCIENCE

TORAY

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

No static cling, even in dry winter air, and recycled fiber whose origin can be proven.
Toray develops fibers and textiles across nyllon, polyester and acrylic, including recycled and biomass-derived materials. Desgining at the fiber level shapes what a finished fabric can do. Its work reaches the details you rarely see but always feel such as the lining inside a jacket.

No static cling. Permanent anti-static polyester lets charge pass freely, even in cold, dry air.

Cleaner recycled fiber. &+™ uses bottle-cleaning and filtering technology developed with Kyoei industry, enabling finer fibers and special cross-sections.

Proven origin. A detectable additive in &+™ raw material verifies its bottle-derived source.

FUJISAKI TEXTILE

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Hand feel engineered from the yarn up, with wool cotton sourced to waste less.
Fujisaki develops original fabrics with mills and factories across Japan through long-standing relationships. Knit and cut-and-sew materials are its core, with woven textiles extending the range. It starts with construction: yarn, structure and hand feel, the qualities a fiber percentage can't describe.

Yarn first. For Autumn/Winter 2026, it presented French terry developed from the yarn up, alongside wool-rich cut-and-sew fabrics.

Overlooked wool. Its ktp.labo®️ brand uses fleece from sheep raised for food, which would otherwise be discarded.

Considered origins. Organic cotton and recycled materials feature in its sustainability collections.

FUNCTIONAL TEXTILES

TAMURAKOMA

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Fabrics built for a full day, combining stretch, quick drying and easy care, made with respun cotton and in audited, safe factories.
Tamurakoma designs fabrics for a full day: the commute, the desk, a walk outside, plans after work. Its tAAAm brand carries only materials that meet at least three of its functionality criteria. Stretch, quick drying, easy care or breathability are combined to suit how the garment will be worn.

Cotton, respun. Re:RISE recovers fabric edges and cutting scraps and blends them with virgin cotton for new yarn.

Circular polyester. C2C turns discarded clothing, textile waste and PET bottles into recycled polyester.

Checked at the source. More than 350 supplier-factory audits on working conditions and safety between 2016 and 2024.

COTTON ESSENTIALS

VANCET

WHY WE CHOOSE THEM · SLOW FASHION · DOING GOOD

Light, refined cotton essentials that pair with everything, supplied in the quantities we need and no more.
VANCET builds its collection around enduring basics, above all solid-color cotton. It manages planning, production, stock and delivery in-house, so the right fabric arrives in the right quantity, on time. Combed for clarity. #1030 60s Combed Lawn removes short fibers during spinning for even strong, lustrous yarn.

Measurably light. Made in Japan, 100% cotton, 72 g/m².

Quiet by design. The less a fabric asks to be noticed, the more its details matter.
